Summer Ice Cream Party
When it is 30ºC/86 ºF outside, it is impossible not to think about ice creams all the time. Now with summer grills happening almost every weekend (sometimes even during the weekdays), and 4th of July coming, I thought why not share some of our favorite ways to eat ice creams? Some hardcore ice cream fans (myself included) like to make their own ice creams, but it is not always possible for those last minute invitations. Lucky for me (and those who live in the US), I go to Whole Foods. Shopping in Whole Foods Market is definitely one of the things I love about living in the US. They make grocery shopping sexy and seduce you with all these "nothing but the best quality" food products. As I often explained my husband (as to why our fridge is fully stuffed with fruits and veggies), I felt like being bewitched every time as soon as I walked into the store. The smell of the freshly cut flowers, the colors of the fruits and vegetables (which are constantly sprayed with mist to ensure they stay in their best conditions), the large selection of organic nuts and grains, and much more, they made me want to buy everything (and I almost did)! For those who live in the San Francisco Bay area as I do, the best Whole Foods store is in Cupertino, which they have the largest selection of fresh produce and food products.
Anyway, back to our ice cream party. So for my last-minute desserts I use these ice creams in various flavors from Whole Foods (some are even organic!), which I know for certain that they are delicious and excellent in quality. And the guests like it when they know they are served by food from Whole Foods (even though they don't always admit it).
Here are four of my favorite ways to serve ice creams:
- With grilled fruits: great way to use that left-over heat from the grill once main course is over. Depending on how much heat you have left in your BBQ, I grill the fruits for about 3-4 mins on both sides or until light brown grill marks are shown on the fruits and the flesh are soft. I love that tenderness and slightly smoked flavor in the fruits after they are grilled. A perfect companion to the cold ice creams. Some of the fruits we like to grill are: pineapple, watermelon, peaches, and strawberries.
- With homemade waffles and fresh fruits: waffles are often for breakfast table on the weekends. Since we seldom allow our kids to have ice cream for breakfast, this is one of the times they can indulge themselves in both, plus the fresh fruits and a drizzle of dark chocoalte. - With cones and sprinkles: this is the most popular way of eating ice cream among small guests who tend to have low tolerance for waiting. And they like to sprinkle!
- With coffee: Affogato is perfect for those who normally like some expresso after meals. One cup of espresso with one scoop of ice cream, easy!

Whole Wheat Waffles
makes three-four Belgian waffles
What you'll need:
- 1 cup Organic Buttermilk Waffle Mix from Whole Foods
- 2/3 cup organic almond milk or any other plant-based milk
- 2 tbsp melted butter or 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 organic egg
- 1 tbsp organic honey or blue agave syrup
How it's made:
- Mix all ingredients together until a smooth batter is formed and no lumps are left.
- Ladle mixture onto preheated waffle iron.
- When the waffles turn golden brown and firm (but not hard), they are done.
- Leave them slightly cooled before serving with the ice creams.
